Blue Morpho Butterfly
It was a fortunate moment when I saw this one. It was at a wild flower garden with a special butterfly farm, very much like a special aviary for these flutterbys, but this beauty was still a bit tricky to find sitting still and when you did, the wings were usually closed up. Timing, they say, is everything.
This guy (or girl) is a Peleides Blue Morpho, Common Morpho, or The Emperor Morpho peleides, so named by Vincenz Kollar around 1850. It's entire lifecycle is only 115 days from egg to adult. They drink the juices from rotting fruits for food.
The iridescent blue color in the wings is the diffraction of the light from millions of tiny scales on its wings. It uses this to frighten away predators, by flashing its wings rapidly. Morpho peleides butterflies stick together in groups, like a mob, to deter their predators.
A Morpho butterfly may be one of over 29 accepted species and 147 accepted subspecies of butterflies in the genus Morpho. The name Morpho, meaning changed or modified, is also an epithet of Aphrodite & Venus.
